Jumping Jack (Bloom, Seaman & Smolev, 1928)
Here’s a piece by my hero Rube Bloom I’ve been enjoying playing for silent cartoons recently, co-written with Bernie Seaman and Marv Smolev (who may have had more to do with writing this than Rube) and published by Irving Berlin. You can hear it used in the 1931 Betty Boop cartoon “Minding the Baby” when the characters are playing jump rope. Thanks as always to my videographer Miss Maybell for helping me film this !

Swiss Cheese Rag (Alphonse Bohrer, 1913)
Переглядів 840Рік тому
Here's a rag I worked up while arranging it for our Quintet to play during our recent residency at Marians Jazzroom in Bern, Switzerland. Wish we had gotten a video of us playing it, but in lieu of that I figured I'd record it as a piano solo while I still have it under my fingers. When we were called to play in Bern last summer I decided I wanted to arrange a special rag with a fitting theme t...
Mandy's Broadway Stroll - A Genuine Ragtime March (Thomas E. Broady, 1898)
Переглядів 1,6 тис.2 роки тому
Here's one we did for the West Coast Ragtime Festival this year. As usual, Miss Maybell and Brian Nalepka are joining me on Washboard and Bass respectively. The title refers to Broadway in Nashville where the city's red light district was centered in the late 1890s.
No-Ze (Homer Denney, 1905)

Happy Halloween! Here's an early Homer Denney rag I like to play. I assume the title is a comedic mispronunciation of "noise" but I have no idea...
Hocus Pocus Rag (Reiterman/Tyers, 1910)
Переглядів 8673 роки тому
Here's one I had fun recording on my Melodigrand 64 Key Piano a few weeks ago. It's basically a re-working of Lewis Reiterman's "Ragtime Cakewalk" of 1898, done for a 1910 Leo Feist Ragtime folio. William H. Tyers, who arranged the rags in the folio, is probably responsible for the musical differences in this 1910 update... and I of course added a few of my own variations in rhythm and raggy ri...
Scrub Rags (Arthur Mueller, 1904)
Переглядів 1,8 тис.3 роки тому
Here's a good old Cincinnati folk rag we recorded last summer, but never posted.... until now!! Upon researching Arthur Mueller, I found no other known ragtime compositions, and the man I found on early 1900s census records that is most likely him was not a professional musician. Thus, I would assume that maybe he was just a guy with publishing connections who bought or stole a rag from some un...
Something Doing (Joplin/Hayden, 1903)

Hiya folks! Here's a good old Scott Joplin rag we had fun learning and recording recently. The earlier Joplin rags tend to be my favorites, and always feel fun to play and improvise on. As always, I'm joined by Miss Maybell on Washboard and Brian Nalepka on Bass... thanks for listening and more videos to come soon ✨
Chicken Charlie (Ashley Ballou, 1905)
Переглядів 8184 роки тому
Here's one of my favorite rags to play, assisted here by Miss Maybell on washboard and Brian Nalepka on Tuba. The composer Ashley M. Ballou (1876 - 1947) was an obscure Chicago pianist and Orchestra leader who directed groups such as the Blackstone Hotel Orchestra (around 1919) and Benson's Chicago Dance Orchestra (c. 1923-24)
Possum and 'Taters (Charles Hunter, 1900)

We wanted to try and record a rag on my Melodigrand 64 key - here's a good old Nashville rag from the early 1900s. As the great Bob Wright once pointed out, the American cities that became known for Country and Rock music were hotbeds for Ragtime music years before that. Nashville is no exception to that, and the early Nashville rags by Charles Hunter, Thomas Brody and others are among some of ...
Penthouse Romance (Rube Bloom, 1934)

Here's another Rube Bloom tune I've been working on the past few weeks. I've been particularly drawn to his music lately since he lived not far from where I grew up in Brooklyn, close to Prospect Park. Thanks, as usual, to my pal Vincent Johnson for hooking me up with the original sheet music to this one.
Patrol Comique (Thomas Hindley, 1886)

Here's a good old pre-ragtime era tune that was heavily recorded in the 1890s-1910s by various Banjoists, Piccoloists and other instrumentalists. I believe the A theme is a quote of an old fiddle tune I've never known the name of...

Horseshoe Rag (Julia Lee Neibergall, 1911)
Переглядів 1,3 тис.4 роки тому
A good old Indiana folk rag by Julia Neibergall (1886-1968) that I've enjoyed for many years, after first hearing it in partial form on one of the "States Rag Medley" piano rolls. Featuring Miss Maybell on Banjolele!
Song of the Bayou (Rube Bloom, 1928)
Переглядів 4114 роки тому
A nice tune by a favorite composer of mine, who like me was also a Brooklynite. This piece won Bloom second prize ($5000) in the 1928 Victor Records Jazz composition contest, losing out to "Two American Sketches", a composition by Thomas Griselle.
Ham and ! - in Ragtime (Arthur Marshall, 1908)
Переглядів 4,9 тис.4 роки тому
Leave us a tip! @Charlie-Judkins on Venmo charliejudkins@gmail.com on Paypal Arthur Marshall (1881-1968) was one of the great Missouri Ragtime composers, and a student of Scott Joplin, who he affectionately dedicated this piece to. I tried to emulate Marshall's playing style a bit here, based on two surviving short recordings of him playing at a St. Louis Ragtime festival in the late 1950s that...

Another winner you both great
I'd never made the connection of this piece being a "Charles Hunter knockoff" before but, damn, you may be right! Nice performance.
A delightful arrangement, one which I suspect truly reflects the composer’s intentions. Really well done!
hi, do you know where can i find the sheet for this tune?? thanks
Ай какие молодцы! Очень красивое исполнение и оригинальные вариации!
1:40 the song really kicks in
Amazing. This needs more likes 👍🏽
to everyone wondering about the domestic abuse: someone in the early 20th century, with all the understanding that comes with that, decided that cave men bonked their partners upon meeting them and dragged them home. This became a common trope when depicting cave men ever since, decreasing in popularity along with the simplistic notion of "cave man" altogether.
Bravo ! 🏆
Well done !

Stomping affectuous rag !
WOW!!!
wow!!!!!
This is the wholesome kind of video UA-cam was founded upon. You could change that "12h ago" to "12y ago" and I'd believe it.
One thing I tend to note with John McManus’ animation is that it usually has slow frame rates to it. A bit janky but not as pronounced as jerry shields from fables Although, some scenes of his do have faster frame rates. I really ain’t for sure cause I ain’t all that good at the animation ID biz but still I presume the crude lip-syncing was because of some assistant goofing cause John McManus (and the other Van Beuren staff) seemed to be pretty good animators. Wow, never heard this, and I love it! I'm a new fan! (yes, I like and subscribed!)
Wow! What a lovely and lively rendition! I'm interested in your CD, big time! still got any? You performed my favorite rag with aplomb. Thanks!!!

It's a Meister from around 1908. I've heard they were sold by Sears. Have had it in our family since November 2000.
